Mortal Kombat X – Story Mode Walkthrough

To unlock the story mode in Mortal Kombat X, you must first complete the game’s tutorial. If you’ve played the story mode in Mortal Kombat 9, you know that NetherRealm has reserved a story-driven cinematic experience for Mortal Kombat X players. While the story mode in MKX isn’t as long as it is in MK9, it still has a lot of combat and it’s the only way to unlock Shinnok as a playable character (you can also grab alternate levels and costumes along the way).

You cannot select your favorite character and play in story mode like other fighting games. Instead, you play through the cinematic experience, taking control of the main character of the story at the point of each fight. There are 12 chapters in the story, each with a different playable character. You even fight some characters that cannot be played in the game.

There are also Quick Time Events (QTE) that appear in story mode. If you see a button on the screen, you have a chance to press that button before the time runs out. If you don’t press the button fast enough or press the wrong button, it can have an impact on the story. The button input is random, but if you take your time and focus on the button on the screen, you will get through the story unscathed.

Most of the battles in the story mode are simple enough to defeat your opponents with a character you may not know. However, if things get too difficult, you can skip three battles in story mode by default. Just pause the game and select the option to skip the fight. You can earn more Jump tokens if you find them on the Krypt. You can also adjust the difficulty of the story mode from the options menu.

How to play story mode on mortal kombat xl

If the Online and Story options are red when you start the game, it means the game is still installing. Some features such as local multiplayer, single player cash games, training and tutorials can be accessed while the game installs Story and Online features.

On Xbox One and PS4, the installation process normally takes less than 30 minutes, but can take up to 90 minutes depending on your system. We recommend that you watch the tutorial to learn the basics of Mortal Kombat X or update your skills while you wait.

To check the progress of the installation on Xbox One, go back to the control panel. Overall progress is shown as a green bar on the game tile.

If the game appears to have finished installing and you still cannot get into Story or Multiplayer mode, try shutting down the system completely and turning it back on. If the modes are not yet available, we recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

PlayStation 4
